Smith stars in Windies win
West Indies got the quadrangular one-day series campaign off to a stunning start as they romped to a 10-wicket win against Holland at Clontarf.
Dwayne Smith’s devastating spell of 4-8 from six overs saw the Dutch collapse from 54 for four to 80 all out before skipper Chris Gayle bludgeoned an unbeaten 51 to ease his side home with more than 35 overs to spare.
After Holland skipper Jeroen Smits won the toss and chose to bat, 17-year-old opener Alexei Kervezee got his side off to a fine start when he hit Daren Powell for four in the first over.
But after that Powell and Ravi Rampaul combined to exert a vice-like grip on the Holland openers.
And it was the impressive Rampaul who made the breakthrough in the fourth over when he trapped Tom de Grooth leg before.
Holland had limped to 34 for one in the 11th over when Rampaul struck again, former batsman Bas Zuiderent falling lbw for 10.
Youngster Kervezee continued to show his huge potential with successive fours off Powell but the bowler had the last laugh when he induced a thin edge and Denesh Ramdin did the rest behind the stumps.
It was all one-way traffic for the rest of the innings as the West Indies bowlers tore through the middle and lower order.
Fidel Edwards was introduced into the attack and struck immediately when he had Peter Borren caught behind for seven before Smith began his rout with the wicket of Billy Stelling.
Three wickets then tumbled without addition as the Ramdin-Smith combination sent Eric Szwarczynski and Henk-Jan Mol on their way and Atse Buurman fell to Darren Sammy for eight.
The end was nigh as Mudassar Bukhari was caught by Gayle for Smith’s fourth wicket and Sammy finished things off by removing Smits.
And Holland were soon ruing their luck in the field when Gayle edged Bukhari through the slips for four in the third over.
That gave Gayle a wake-up call as he launched into a series of trademark lusty blows to anything over-pitched.
Bukhari and Edgar Schiferli were hit out of the attack and change bowlers Stelling and Borren did not fare any better.
Gayle smashed Stelling’s second ball for four over square-leg before hammering his next delivery over the pavilion.
He brought up his half-century from 42 balls, including six boundaries and a six, and Devon Smith (29 not out) sealed the win with another boundary off Stelling.
