Sri Lanka end on high
Sri Lanka picked up six wickets in the final session to leave West Indies 268 for seven at stumps on the second day of the second Test in Trinidad.
Chris Gayle, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Ramnaresh Sarwan (57) and Devon Smith all made healthy contributions as the hosts chipped away at the tourists’ total of 278 on a rain-affected day at Port-of-Spain. But no batsman could go on to a big score.
Gayle fell five short of his half-century when he drove Thilan Thushara straight to Michael Vandort in the gully. Chattergoon and Sarwan saw the hosts through to an early tea.
But the evening session saw Chattergoon add only one run before he was bowled by a Chaminda Vaas inswinger - and then Muttiah Muralitharan took the first of his three wickets, trapping Marlon Samuels lbw.
Murali also accounted for Sarwan, caught by Malinda Warnapura at leg gully, and the Windies were 199 for five when Shivnarine Chanderpaul was lbw to Thushara.
Dwayne Bravo and Devon Smith also went before the close, leaving Denesh Ramdin and Jerome Taylor in occupation when the Windies accepted the offer of bad light.
Chamara Silva (76) was the only Sri Lankan batsman to resist during the morning as his team-mates came and went cheaply.
Resuming on 217 for five, Tillakaratne Dilshan added only four runs to his overnight 58 - and it was only Silva who stood firm until he was last out, caught at long leg.
