Scott Styris broke his thumb and will be out for six weeks

New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris is expected to be out of action for six weeks after it was announced he would need surgery on a fractured thumb.

The 33-year-old sustained the injury in the first Twenty20 international against West Indies at Eden Park and will now have a pin inserted into his thumb.

"That's unfortunate for him and unfortunate for the team," said captain Daniel Vettori. "We will have to make do without him."

No replacement will be added to the Twenty20 squad for the match at Seddon Park in Hamilton which New Zealand need to win if they are to tie the two-match series after losing by 10 runs in a super-over decider in Auckland.

The one-day squad is expected to be announced on Sunday.

"We have a pretty good one-day squad so we are hoping (losing Styris) won't cause too much of an issue," added Vettori.

"Probably Jesse (Ryder) picks up that load with the ball that Scotty's done so well for us for a long time."

The five-match one-day series starts in Queenstown on New Year's Eve followed by games in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Napier.
