TwelfthMan: My account
All-rounder Andrew Symonds' exile from the national team looks set to end after he was named in Australia's preliminary 30-man squad for the World Twenty20 to be played in England in June.
Selectors have also recalled fast bowlers Brett Lee and Shaun Tait, all-rounder Shane Watson and batsman Shaun Marsh from injury, with all four expected to prove their fitness in coming weeks.
And with such a large squad named, there are also several players uncapped at international limited-overs level, including Graham Manou, who was chosen as a back-up to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, as well as Aaron Heal, Jason Krejza and Robert Quiney.
The initial squad will be halved on May 5 with the final 15 travelling to England for the second staging of cricket's glamour event.
"We consider the squad to contain a good blend of youth and experience with several players who have been outstanding in Twenty20 cricket both internationally and domestically this year," said chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch.
"From this 30 we hope to pick a final World Twenty20 squad that if they play to their ability will be a very exciting, entertaining and extremely competitive team in their quest for the trophy."
Symonds has not played for Australia since the Boxing Day Test at the MCG late last year, the Queenslander missing the final Test against South Africa in Sydney through injury before Cricket Australia decided he should not be considered for selection.
That meant that Symonds, who also missed last year's tour of India as a result of being sent home from Darwin following his failure to attend a team meeting before a match against Bangladesh, has not been part of the Test or limited-overs squads in South Africa.
But according to CA chief executive James Sutherland, the 33-year-old has proven to the team's leadership group he is ready to return - provided he has no issues with form or fitness - much to the delight of Hilditch.
"Andrew Symonds has been made available for selection by Cricket Australia and joins the squad of 30. At his best Andrew is one of the most dynamic Twenty20 players in the world and his progress will be monitored leading up to the selection of the final 15," Hilditch said.
Symonds said he was appreciative of the support shown to him by Cricket Australia.
"I'm grateful that I've got the chance to get back to playing for Australia again," he said.
"Hopefully the boys go well in South Africa tonight and for the rest of the series because I'd love to be back in the rooms with them again sometime down the track."
Symonds will travel to South Africa next week to link with the Deccan Chargers franchise in the Indian Premier League that starts later this month.
