Tait wants ODI return
Pace bowler Shaun Tait is looking forward to having another crack at New Zealand if he is picked for Australia’s opening Chappell-Hadlee Trophy match on Friday.
Tait finished with figures of 2-22 from his four overs in Tuesday night's Twenty20 encounter with the Black Caps at the WACA, and his ability to frighten the Kiwi top order shone through.
Tait is now hopeful that he has done enough to get the nod for the opening game of the three-match one-day series to be held at the Adelaide Oval.
"I wouldn't mind playing in front of my home crowd - I haven't done that before for Australia,” he said. “It's something I'd be looking forward to my whole career and hopefully I can get a gig."
Tait, along with fellow pacemen Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson, reduced New Zealand to 59 for six at one stage in their Twenty20 clash as the tourists eventually fell 54 runs short of Australia's total of 186.
The encounter was Tait's first international appearance since suffering a relapse of an elbow injury, but the player felt that he was on top of his game.
When asked how fast he felt he was bowling, Tait said: "It's hard to tell, the speed camera wasn't on last night which was a bit disappointing but it was as quick as I've bowled.
"There were a couple of times when the [New Zealand] lads were uncomfortable. [Jamie] How was my first ball and it took his glove off, and obviously I knocked over [Ross Taylor] fourth ball or something," he said.
While happy with his performance, Tait added he was far from guaranteed a place in the Australian side in the coming months.
"You can bowl well in these limited-overs games but Test matches are a different," the 24-year-old said.
"The fact is, the Australian side is such a force it's hard to break in. Mitchell Johnson, Lee, [Stuart] Clark, these bowlers, it's a tough side to get into.
"I'm feeling pretty fit at the moment, the last few games have definitely helped with my fitness. I feel I'm bowling at my best at the moment."
