South Africa captain AB de Villiers will miss the remainder of the one-day international series with New Zealand after receiving a two-match suspension for his team’s slow over-rate in the series-opener.

The Proteas suffered a shock one-wicket defeat at Paarl yesterday and have now been handed a further setback.

AB de Villiers

South Africa captain AB de Villiers has paid a heavy price for his team's slow over-rate in the first ODI with New Zealand

De Villiers’ two-game ban comes after South Africa were found to be six overs short of their target at the end of the match. As this is judged to be a serious over-rate offence, each member of the team has also been fined 100 per cent of their match fee.

If de Villiers, who admitted the charge, is found guilty of a second serious over-rate offence in an ODI over the next 12 months, he will receive a sanction of between two and eight suspension points under the ICC code of conduct.

Two points equates to a suspension from one Test or two ODIs.

South Africa next face New Zealand at Kimberley on Tuesday, with the third and final ODI taking place at Potchefstroom three days later.

David Miller has taken de Villiers' place in the Proteas squad.
