Vaas sets sights on World Cup
Veteran Sri Lanka bowler Chaminda Vaas is in buoyant mood ahead of the World Cup in the West Indies.
The seamer, who is being rested from the team’s current tour of India, is hoping for one final bow before retirement and is eyeing success in the Carribean to cap his remarkable career.
Along with Muttiah Muralitharan, Vaas has been the stalwart of Sri Lanka’s bowling attack for 13 years and was part of the team that shocked Australia in the World Cup final 10 years ago.
But now he wants more and is hoping for success in the tournament, which gets underway in less than two months.
“My dream is to win the World Cup this year,” he said. “It will be a nice way to probably finish off my World Cup career.”
“In 1996 under Arjuna Ranatunga in my first go, Sri Lanka clinched the World Cup.”
Vaas, who turns 33 next week, admits that despite his age, hunger for success in the sport was still very prevalent.
“It is still like a dream for me yet. I want to really do well this time and ensure that Sri Lanka clinches the cup this time,” he added.
