New Zealand will be without Daniel Vettori for the second Test against West Indies after he was ruled out with a groin strain.

The 33-year-old suffered the injury during their nine-wicket defeat in the opening Test in Antigua, and he will now return home where he hopes to regain fitness for their series against India which begins on August 23.

His absence creates an opportunity for leg-spinner Tarun Nethula to make his Test bow at the age of 29.

New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum believes it will be a great loss to the side who are attempting to level the series from tomorrow at Sabina Park.

"It's a huge loss,” McCullum said. “Not just the performance on the field, which he's done for a number of years consistently and really led us from that point of view, but also what he offers in the change-room and when we're out on the field.”

"We hope he rests up and gets himself recuperated and comes back in a couple of months' time for us and we're able to get him back into a team that's performing a bit better than we have of late."
