Daniel Vettori hopes being dropped for the washed-out fourth one-day match against West Indies will be a wake-up call for Jesse Ryder.
Ryder was stood down from Saturday's match in Auckland after he missed a team meeting and practice following a drinking session after Wednesday's win in Wellington.
The 24-year-old was also fined an undisclosed sum by New Zealand Cricket.
"Jesse has an understanding of what he did and how he let the team down. With missing this game hopefully it's a bit of a wake-up call for him and we only get the good side of him from here on in," New Zealand captain Vettori said.
It was not Ryder's first drink-related indiscretion. Last February he smashed his hand through a window in a bar in Christchurch while out celebrating New Zealand's one-day series win against England.
That resulted in the left-handed batsman having surgery to repair a severed tendon which kept him out of international cricket for six months.
But Vettori defended the decision to keep Ryder involved in the team at Eden Park on Saturday.
Ryder ran the drinks throughout the match, which was eventually abandoned due to heavy rain, and received loud cheers each time he stepped on to the field.
"I think he had to be accountable for his actions. I wanted him around here because it would have been easier to move him off to Wellington to play a game," Vettori explained.
"He needed to be around the team and put the work in because he is an important part of this set-up and the guys in the team really like him.
"I suppose we wanted to help him get through it but we didn't want it to be a case of just slinking off and being able to hide away.
"It was showing up here and proving to us how important it is to play for New Zealand."
Vettori revealed Ryder had been embarrassed by the crowd's reaction.
"He's the sort of guy the public loves," Vettori added. "They love the way he plays his cricket but he realises he's made a mistake and he was embarrassed a bit by the reaction."
Ryder will get an early chance to make amends. He will return to the top of the order for Tuesday's series decider in Napier.
Martin Guptill, who scored an unbeaten 122 on debut, will drop to number three with Mathew Sinclair making way.
