Watson fined for outburst

Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has been fined 10% of his match fee for breaching the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct during the third Test against India.

Watson was charged with having a verbal confrontation with India batsman Gautam Gambhir on the first day of the Test in New Delhi, although he pleaded not guilty.

Emirates Elite Panel match referee Chris Broad decided Watson had breached clause C1 of the code which states players “shall at all times conduct play within in the spirit of the game as well as within the Laws of Cricket”.

Broad fined the 27-year-old 10% of his match fee and there is no right of appeal.

Gambhir’s hearing has been adjourned until tomorrow morning to allow the match referee to review the evidence.

The player has pleaded guilty to a C1 Level 2 offence of not playing within the spirit of cricket.
