West Indies off-spinners Marlon Samuels and Shane Shillingford shared seven wickets as Zimbabwe struggled with the bat before making possibly crucial inroads with the ball late on the first day of the two-Test series.

Samuels polished off the tail to finish with flattering figures of 4-13 while Shillingford returned 3-58 as the tourists, playing their first Test in more than a year, slumped from 100 for two to 211 all out after winning the toss at the Kensington Oval, Barbados.

Opening batsman Tino Mawoyo’s 50 was important for Zimbabwe and they were further boosted when Kyle Jarvis claimed two scalps in as many balls - the latter, controversially, with his seventh delivery of the over - to leave the Windies on 18 for two. Jarvis trapped Kieran Powell lbw and immediately bowled nightwatchman Kemar Roach.

Mawoyo, who was caught at bad-pad off Shillingford to leave Zimbabwe 100 for three, lacked support in the face of an initial pace barrage from Kemar Roach, Tino Best and Shannon Gabriel. Samuels, returning from a facial injury, and Shillingford then took over as Craig Ervine was the highest scorer after Mawoyo with 29.
