Warwickshire took the Second XI Trophy with a crushing 93-run victory over Yorkshire at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium – with a Navdeep Poonia century and four wickets from Naqaash Tahir the mainstays of the Bears’ success.

Poonia shared in an opening stand of 118 with Moeen Ali (63), and then powered the score along to help Warwickshire post 326 all out from their 50 overs.

Poonia completed his century in the 33rd over, and with Jim Troughton also in fine form the Bears were already 229 when Poonia became Greg Norton’s second victim, bowled for 101.

Troughton also passed the half-century mark, reaching 80 before being bowled by leg-spinner Mark Lawson, and Warwickshire skipper Luke Parker maintained the momentum with a rapid 30 before a flurry of late wickets kept the total within Yorkshire’s sights.

Norton and Lawson combined to do the damage, the former finishing with 5-54 from his 10 overs, while Lawson took 3-64.

Any hopes Yorkshire had of staging a dramatic run-chase soon disappeared, however, with Warwickshire’s opening pair of Tahir (4-35) and Stuart Hole ripping into the top order.

Tahir had Matthew Wood caught behind for a duck first ball, saw off Adam Lyth three balls later, and went on to grab four wickets in his first six overs. After 11 overs of their innings Yorkshire were struggling badly on 59 for five.

Captain Simon Guy (64) and David Wainwright (70) did put on 93 for the sixth wicket, but with Ian Westwood (3-59) taking key wickets down the order, it was only in the 40th over that Nick Warren bowled Norton for two to securing the Trophy for the Warwickshire for the first time in 15 years.

Warwickshire’s Second XI coach Neal Abberley told thebears.co.uk: “This was a terrific performance which was set up by the first three batsmen. Ali, Poonia and Troughton all played very special innings setting a total which gave us a great chance in the game.

“The bowlers then attacked from the start with a brilliant spell from Naqaash putting us in control of the match very early on.”
