Newman ton sets up Middlesex win

Scott Newman

Opener Scott Newman smashed 122 to boost Middlesex to 241 for five, which proved too much for the Netherlands

Middlesex were comfortable victors over the Netherlands in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at Amstelveen.

Scott Newman was the star man for the visitors as he smashed 122 off 107 balls, including three sixes, to help the Panthers to 241 for five from their 40 overs.

Pedro Collins was then the chief tormentor of the Dutch batting line-up as the Barbados man claimed 4-25 as the hosts were bowled out for 195, to seal a 46-run win for Middlesex.

The Londoners had put 112 on the board before their first wicket fell as Neil Dexter edged one to wicketkeeper Atse Buurman off the bowling of Peter Borren for 40.

Owais Shah fell cheaply but Newman’s impressive knock kept the innings ticking along nicely, with Dawid Malan adding 23 and Gareth Berg chipping in with 21.

Mark Jonkman took Berg’s wicket to finish with team-best figures for the day of 2-49.

The Netherlands’ innings got off to the worst start imaginable as opener Eric Szwarczynski played back at Collins to be out for a first-ball duck, and it was seven for two when Nick Statham was trapped lbw by the same bowler for one.

Australian batsman Michael Dighton impressed with 85 off 102 balls and Tom Cooper notched 30, but seven players failed to score in double figures.

Collins claimed the final wicket to fall, dismissing Mohammad Kashif for one.
