Tredwell turns on the style for Lions

James Tredwell

James Tredwell returned figures of 3-22 from three overs as England Lions opened their account with a convincing victory

England Lions began their tour of the United Arab Emirates in impressive fashion courtesy of a 52-run win over the UAE A team in the opening Twenty20 encounter in Sharjah.

Michael Lumb and Ian Bell were among those who shone with the bat in an imposing total of 184 for five, before off-spinner James Tredwell claimed 3-22 to help limit the UAE to 132 for seven.

Left-hander Lumb hit a fluent 42 off 32 balls, building on the rapid start made by Craig Kieswetter (31) and Steven Davies (21), who put on 38 for the first wicket in just four overs.

Captain Andrew Gale contributed 17 and Peter Trego a brutal 10-ball 25 containing three sixes, while Bell maintained England’s momentum with an unbeaten 37 off just 21 deliveries.

Openers Indika Sampath and Amjad Ali propelled the UAE to 51 in little more than five overs, but Tredwell’s introduction into the attack changed the complexion of the contest.

He removed Ali, Sampath and Swapnil Patel in successive overs to reduce the home side to 84 for three and, although Sajid Mahmood leaked 19 in his first over, Trego struck twice in three balls to extinguish any remaining hope of a UAE win. He finished with 2-14 from four economical overs.

Friday sees the Lions face Pakistan A in the first of three Twenty20s in five days, before they meet the senior England side in a 20-over tour game next Wednesday.
