Nkruma Bonner struck a defiant 72 to deny England Lions victory in their West Indies Cricket Board regional championship match against the Combined Campuses & Colleges.

The Lions looked set to record their second win in the competition as they reduced their hosts to 81 for five in pursuit of 302.

However, Bonner dug in thereafter and, although he departed shortly before the close, CC&C ended the match on 204 for seven.

Bonner had earlier taken 4-27 as the Lions pushed for quick runs before declaring their second innings. They added 88 to their overnight score of 168, but lost seven wickets in the process.

Craig Kieswetter resumed on 102 but managed just one more run before being stumped off Kavesh Kantasingh, who then removed Jimmy Adams for 72 and skipper James Hildreth for 10.

Leg-spinner Bonner took centre stage with four wickets in five overs, although Yorkshire’s Andrew Gale boosted the tourists’ total with a useful 48.

James Harris made an immediate impression with the ball in CC&C’s second innings as he won lbw decisions against Omar Phillips and Kyle Corbin, who made two and nought respectively.

Chris Woakes and Maurice Chambers also picked up two wickets apiece and Danny Briggs eventually accounted for Bonner, but the home side held on.

They took three points from the match, while the Lions pick up six after claiming a first-innings lead. Hildreth's side are third in the eight-team table - six points behind leaders Jamaica - after four of their seven games.
