Nottinghamshire were held up by rain and further defiance from Durham’s last pair before they clinched their second win from as many games in this season’s LV= County Championship.

Needing to take one wicket at the Emirates Durham ICG, the visitors were forced back into the pavilion by rain after two overs and, following a 30-minute break, last man Mitchell Claydon proceeded to his maiden half-century.

Mitchell Claydon struck a maiden first-class fifty, but could not stop Durham slipping to a heavy defeat against Nottinghamshire

The Australian’s previous best for Durham was 40 out of an all-out total of 114 against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 2008.

Resuming on 18 in a total of 203 for nine, Claydon took 10 off Andy Carter’s opening over today. The visitors persisted with the 6ft 6in seamer, even though he proved expensive.

Andre Adams was also unable to grab the scalp he wanted to complete a five-wicket haul and eventually made way for the left-arm spin of Samit Patel.

There were eight fours in Claydon’s 53-ball fifty, but, after 50 runs had been added today, he was caught at long-on by Luke Fletcher off Patel for 55.

That gave Nottinghamshire - victors against Worcestershire in their season-opening encounter last week - a 114-run success as Durham were dismissed for 253, with Graham Onions left unbeaten on 28 in a last-wicket stand of 73.
