Tatenda Taibu

Tatenda Taibu made 74 as Zimbabwe racked up 303

Zimbabwe proved too strong for Ireland as they crushed them by 156 runs in the first match of the triangular series in Nairobi.

Hamilton Masakadza got Zimbabwe off to the perfect start, reaching 72 off 66 balls in an innings which included 13 fours and a six as he and Cephas Zhuwawo (16) put on 71 for the first wicket.

Chamu Chibhabha also contributed 51 to the total and wicketkeeper and former captain Tatenda Taibu made 74 as Zimbabwe ended their 50 overs on 303 for eight.

Elton Chigumbura then got rid of Niall O’Brien and Gary Wilson in an effective opening spell of 2-18 to start the slide for Ireland.

Only Kevin O’Brien with 38 and Kyle McCallan with 25 put up any real resistance as Prosper Utseya and Timycen Maruma each also claimed two wickets.

Keith Dabengwa was the pick of the Zimbabwe bowlers with 3-17 off his six overs, while Ray Price, although wicketless, only bled seven runs from his full compliment of 10 overs.

Ireland were eventually all out for 147 in 46.1 overs.

They go on to play Kenya in the second match of the series tomorrow.
