Lord's encounter washed out
Middlesex’s Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B game against Essex was abandoned without a ball being bowled at Lord's.
Umpires Neil Mallender and Nick Cook made two inspections of the square before calling the game off at 3.45pm.
Although morning rain had stopped and the outfield was in good condition, the pitch itself had got damp under the covers and, after consulting with captains Shaun Udal and Mark Pettini, the umpires decided there was no chance of a start.
It leaves Essex, who face Derbyshire at Leek tomorrow, still looking for their first win in the competition.
New Zealand fast bowler Chris Martin is set to make his debut then, after joining on a short-term contract.
The 35-year-old will be their overseas player until Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria's arrival later this month.
