Pragyan Ojha took 6-42 as Surrey clinched promotion to Division One of the LV= County Championship with an innings-and-126-run victory over Derbyshire inside three days at the Kia Oval.

Ojha, the India left-arm spinner, earned himself match figures of 10-90 to spearhead Surrey's drive towards their fourth successive championship win - a run of success that has seen them squeeze into the promotion places at the last possible moment.

Surrey’s players celebrated with understandable delight when Gareth Batty had Mark Footitt caught at long-off at 2.30pm to wrap up Derbyshire's second innings for just 152.

Earlier in the day, after resuming their first innings on 177 for seven in reply to Surrey's 468, Derbyshire slid to 190 all out in just 20 minutes – and were forced to follow on.

Opener Paul Borrington, ninth out for a resolute 87 in Derbyshire's first innings, fell for only 19 second time around - but both times the 23-year-old was the victim of magnificent bowling by Ojha, who looked a class act throughout the game.

First he was stumped by Steven Davies after being drawn forward and beaten in the flight, and in the second innings lost his off stump when another blameless forward defensive stroke could not keep out a ball which again turned sharply from a perfect line and length.

Surrey's memorable day began with Tim Groenewald being caught off bat and pad as he prodded forward to Batty's off-spin, and when Borrington had finally been removed - after 225 balls and more than four hours at the crease - the end of Derbyshire's first innings came off the next ball, with last man Footitt leg before to Ojha, who finished with 4-48 from 31.2 overs.

Following on 278 behind, Derbyshire were soon in deeper trouble. Matt Lineker avoided a pair, but on 16 he drove loosely at Chris Jordan and lost his off and middle stumps.

It soon became 39 for two and then 40 for three when Wayne Madsen went back and was lbw to a quicker ball from Ojha and, in the following over, Wes Durston was leg before to the pace of Stuart Meaker for a second-ball duck.

Once Borrington was fourth out after another 78 minutes of resistance, shortly before lunch, the end came quickly.

Dan Redfern was dismissed in the first over after the interval, caught at short-leg, and Ojha struck again four overs later when Luke Sutton shouldered arms and was bowled for five.

Ojha completed a five-wicket haul by having Jonathan Clare caught at slip by Tom Maynard for a duck, and then Jordan pulled off a brilliant running catch at long-leg when Ross Whiteley, on 16, top-edged a pull at Meaker.

Some brave hitting by Groenewald, who swung Batty for two sixes in a breezy 33 not out, and fellow tailender Tom Knight delayed the Surrey celebrations, but Ojha had Knight comfortably stumped as he drew him down the pitch.

When last man Footitt - after a few more meaty blows - was caught for 17, Surrey's players went into a celebratory huddle after the obligatory jumping about.

Following an absence of three seasons, they are back in Division One and also have the Clydesdale Bank 40 final against Somerset at Lord's to look forward to on Saturday.
