Gary Ballance stole the show once again for Yorkshire as they eased to an eight-wicket win over the Unicorns in the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group C match at Scarborough.

The Zimbabwean-born left-hander struck 103 not out and shared 160 with Adam Lyth, who finished unbeaten on 60, to ensure Yorkshire chased down a target of 185 inside 33 overs.

New-ball duo Mitchell Starc and Ryan Sidebottom had earlier claimed three wickets apiece as the Unicorns laboured to 184 all out, despite a defiant knock of 83 not out from wicketkeeper-batsman Tom New.

The early departures of Andrew Gale and Phil Jaques put the White Rose on the back foot, but Ballance then took centre stage with another excellent performance.

The Unicorns were unable to contain Gary Ballance at Scarborough as the left-hander crashed his way to 103 not out from 91 deliveries

Fresh from compiling an unbeaten 121 in the LV= County Championship win over Gloucestershire earlier this month and 77 not out in last weekend’s CB40 victory over Derbyshire, he continued his fine form by thumping eight fours and four sixes in a powerful 91-ball innings.

Lyth, a similarly attacking presence, offered able support and Yorkshire’s triumph was assured long before the opener hit Glen Querl for four to bring proceedings to a close.

Gale and Jaques had departed in successive overs, the skipper falling lbw to Warren Lee for 17 before the latter edged through to New off Querl.

New was the only batsman to offer any prolonged resistance after the Unicorns had been asked to bat first this afternoon.

In facing 92 deliveries, the former Leicestershire keeper kept Yorkshire’s bowlers at bay while wickets tumbled around him.

Sidebottom bowled James Ord in the first over of the match to bring New to the crease.

Michael Thornely then became a second victim for Sidebottom with the score on 45 before Jordan Levitt was trapped leg before by Anthony McGrath.

Starc made his mark soon after, accounting for Keith Parsons, Luis Reece and Bradley Wadlan to leave the Unicorns reeling on 149 for six.

Off-spinner Azeem Rafiq ousted Querl for a duck and Moin Ashraf bowled both Lee and Luke Beaven before Sidebottom removed Steven Cheetham in similar fashion with the final ball of the 40th over.
