Mullally started his cricketing career with Western Australia but qualified to play for England due to being born in Southend. He joined Leicestershire in 1990 after a brief stint with Hampshire in 1988 and returned to the south coast in 2000 where he made an immediate impact, sharing the wicket-taking duties with Shane Warne. Mullally played 19 Tests for England but was regarded as more of a one-day specialist and played in 50 limited-overs internationals, including the 1999 World Cup.
