Wicketkeeper-batsman Hodd started his career at Sussex and, having moved to Surrey for two years, returned in 2006 to act as Matt Prior’s understudy following the departure of Tim Ambrose.
His timing turned out to be perfect, with Prior making his England Test debut the following summer, striking an unbeaten century on debut against West Indies. Prior dropped out of the five-day side in 2008, but, since regaining the gloves later that year, has been an ever-present.
That ensured Hodd became Sussex’s first-choice gloveman, though his returns with the bat were not overly impressive.
He was subsequently usurped by emerging stumper Ben Brown towards the end of the 2011 season.
