Ashley Cowan

Made his county debut in 1995 and quickly made an impression, enjoying a tremendous season in 1996 when he claimed a hat-trick against Gloucestershire.

His form was rewarded when he was selected for England’s 1998 tour of West Indies, although he did not make an appearance.

Has been a consistent threat with his seam bowling when fit but he has struggled with injuries, particularly in recent years.

Missed the whole of 2003 with a knee problem and only featured in the one-day side during 2004, where he can contribute vital runs down the order.

In early 2005 he toured Namibia with the MCC and in a 50-over match against the national side he took 2-39.

His loyalty to the county was rewarded when it was announced that Essex were giving him a benefit year in 2006 although he made only a handful of appearances in their successful 2005 season.

Announced his retirement during the 2006 season due to knee problems.
