Foakes is a highly promising wicketkeeper-batsman who may need to patient to break into the Essex side.
He impressed with a match-winning innings of 69 on his third youth one-day international appearance for England Under-19s versus Sri Lanka in February 2011.
Foakes made his debut against the touring Sri Lankans in June 2011, although the presence of James Foster and Adam Wheater in the Essex ranks at that stage meant first-team opportunities were limited.
Having established himself as a regular for England U19s, he made an eye-catching 93 on his LV= County Championship bow in May 2012 and was England's leading scorer at the U19 World Cup that summer with 234 runs at an average of 39.
His form earned him places in the England Performance Programme and England Lions squad that winter and, with Wheater having sought pastures new at Hampshire, 2013 proved to be a breakthrough first-class season for Foakes.
Duties behind the stumps were shared with Foster and a maiden championship century arrived in the innings victory over Leicestershire, one of many occasions on which Foakes displayed class and composure.
Foakes served as 12th man for England during the dramatic first Investec Test against Australia at Trent Bridge and proceeded to tour Down Under as a member of the EPP.
