Former England Under-19 captain Shafayat was the first graduate of the Nottinghamshire Academy, impressing observers with his timing and fluent strokeplay.
As a precocious 17-year-old he marked his Notts debut in 2001 with an assured 75 against Middlesex and averaged nearly 40 after his first three matches.
However, he failed to live up to expectation and, having averaged just over 30, he left Notts to join Northamptonshire in 2005.
He spent just two commendable rather than prolific summers at Wantage Road, falling short of 1,000 County Championship runs in both, before returning to Notts to be closer to his family in 2008.
Shahfayat, whose medium-pace and wicketkeeping are further strings to his bow, made the most of limited opportunities to average almost 40 in the championship in his comeback season.
But dwindling first-team opportunities and a dip in form over the next two years saw him released by Notts at the end of the 2010 campaign.
