An opening batsman who can be devastating on his day. He went 18 months without playing a Test before scoring back-to-back 150s following his recall in the 2013 series against Australia. Has not made a Test hundred since, though, with his top score of 97 coming in the Boxing Day Test versus South Africa.
At times the stroke-playing opener has been very good, though an overall Test average of 38 doesn’t really do him justice. He is, however, living proof of the value of a second chance – his first stab at Test cricket was unsuccessful; his second, which came when India regenerated their team after defeat to England in 2012-13,
has been a hit. Made 146 in first Test v England at Trent Bridge at start of 2014 Investec Series.
