Murtagh is younger brother to bowling all-rounder Tim, who left Surrey at the end of 2006 to join Middlesex.
The top-order batsman played only two totesport league matches for the county in 2005, but impressed in both.
A stylish player, who is quick between the wickets, and an excellent fielder - winning the fielder of the year award in 2005 - Murtagh is assured of more first team-cricket for Surrey in 2006 and beyond after signing a new summer contract.
He spent the entire 2007 season in the second team as he was not able to make the step up to the first XI.
He played three championship matches in 2008, without much success as he scored just 12 runs. However, his innings of 74 in the final NatWest Pro40 game against Leicestershire gave him and the club a much-needed boost.
It was not enough to keep him in the picture for 2009, and he was shown the door along with three others in August 2009.
