Mitchell is a reliable opening batsman who succeeded Vikram Solanki as captain towards the end of the 2010 season and led Worcestershire to LV= County Championship promotion.
He made his senior debut in all three formats during 2005 and gradually established himself over the next few years. The right-hander’s average of 48 helped the Royals win the NatWest Pro 40 in 2007.
Mitchell aided championship promotion the next year and in 2009 scored 1,000 championship runs for the first time. However, Worcestershire were relegated without a win in that competition.
Having been made vice-captain, he led Worcestershire for much of their 2010 Friends Provident t20 campaign in the absence of the injured Solanki.
When Solanki resigned following a championship defeat at Glamorgan in mid-August, Mitchell oversaw the reduction of a 37-point deficit on the Welsh county to pip them by five points on the final day of the championship season.
Despite being favourites for relegation, Worcestershire defied the odds by staying in the top flight under Mitchell’s captaincy.
