Born in Roehampton but brought up in South Africa, Malan - a left-handed batsman who bowls occasional leg-spin - played for Boland during the 2005/06 domestic season. He was restricted to second XI cricket with Middlesex and Worcestershire - as well as appearances for MCC Young Cricketers - before he made his senior debut for Middlesex in 2006. That came against Surrey in the Twenty20 Cup, a competition in which he made his name after finally being given a run in the first XI in 2008.
