The top-order batsman became the youngest player to represent Durham in first-class cricket when he made his debut against Derbyshire in 2001, 19 days after his 17th birthday. A product of Durham's academy, he gained useful experience playing for the Durham Board XI in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy from 2001-2003. Scott toured Australia with England Under-17 in 2000-01 and hit his maiden one-day century at Darlington in 2003.
