Recognised as one of his generation's outstanding international captains, opening batsman Smith signed a three-year deal to lead Surrey from the 2013 campaign.
The powerfully-built left-hander has been South Africa skipper for the vast majority of his 100-plus Tests and has enjoyed significant success in England, leading the Proteas to series wins there in 2008 and 2012 having overseen a drawn rubber in 2003.
Smith announced himself to England in 2003 with double-hundreds in the first two Tests of the series and has scored five more Test tons versus the same opponents. He has also made three one-day international centuries versus England.
Smith's only previous county experience came in 2005 when he led Somerset to Twenty20 Cup glory.
