Wood was captain of the Yorkshire Under-17 side which beat Surrey in the 2005 ECB U17 County Championship final. He is a useful top-order batsman and wicketkeeper.
He also represented England U17 that summer, having previously played for his country at Under-15 and Under-16 level.
He was named in the England Under-19 squad for the tour of Bangladesh in November and December 2005 and although England lost all 11 games, Wood retained his place in the squad for the 2006 Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka.
He featured in the four-run win against Ireland which secured their progress from the group stage before they were eventually knocked out by India in the semi-finals.
He was selected as vice-captain in the England U19 squad for two triangular one-day tournaments in Malaysia in January and February 2007.
He did not play for Yorkshire in the 2007 or 2008 domestic county seasons, but returned to Malaysia for the Under-19 World Cup in 2008.
