Benning is a top-order batsman, an athletic fielder and also a useful medium-pace bowler. He played for England at Under-15 to Under-19 level and Surrey until 2009, when he joined Leicestershire. He played four first-class games for Surrey in 2005, making a top-score of 124, but was more widely used in the one-day format as he played every match in the Totesport league and scored 553 runs and took nine wickets. He was the first recipient of the Ben Hollioake Scholarship, which is awarded to a young player who shows great potential. He played half of Surrey's championship games in 2007...
