Previously at Leicestershire, Ormond rose through the ranks playing for England at Under-19 level before his selection for England A in 1997/98. He made his Test debut for England against Australia in 2001 and his first wicket was that of Ricky Ponting. He was chosen for the winter tours to India and New Zealand later that year but after taking only one wicket in the opening match he was dropped and never regained his place.
