Batty is a wicket-keeper batsman who got his chance at Surrey due to Alec Stewart's international commitments. He was asked to open the innings in 2001 and has been used both as an opener and in the middle order. Batty was appointed as captain of Surrey for the 2004 season, which saw them finish third in the County Championship but relegated in the totesport League. He equalled the world record of eight catches in an innings, behind the stumps, in 2004 and followed it up by beating his coach Steve Rixon's world record of catches in a match when he took 11 against Lancashire at Old Traff...
