An enthusiastic off-break bowler who made his debut for Gloucestershire in 1988 but was not awarded his county cap until 1996.
Ball works well under pressure, is an excellent slip fielder and has been known to make some good scores with the bat.
He played for England Under 19s in 1989 and was called up for the senior team in 2001 at the age of 31 when Robert Croft withdrew from the tour of India. He did not play a Test but came on as a substitute fielder and also featured in one tour match.
Ball was chairman of the Professional Cricketers' Association, a role which he relinquished when he retired from all forms of cricket in January 2007.
