An opening batsman by trade, Wood occupied most spots in the top and middle order during stints with Somerset and Nottinghamshire.
He made his Somerset debut in 2001, and averaged over 40 in the County Championship in 2004, a season that saw him score his first hundred away from Taunton.
Wood followed that up with 1,058 first-class runs at an average of 48.09 the following season, as well as helping Somerset win the Twenty20 Cup.
However, he found opportunities increasingly hard to come by, especially following Marcus Trescothick’s return from England duty, and left for Trent Bridge in 2008.
Although he played in all but three of Notts’ championship games that summer, his appearances became ever more fleeting, and he was released at the end of a 2010 summer in which he featured just four times.
