A left-arm spinner of renowned accuracy, Patel made his first class debut in 1989 and through sheer hard work he earned his first Test appearance in 1996 against India, the country of his birth. He was restricted to 10 overs in the eight-wicket win at Edgbaston, where he was brought in to replace the injured Phil Tufnell, and was left out of the side for the second Test at Lord’s.
