The leg-spinner became the youngest player ever to represent Scotland, aged 16, against Leicestershire in 2002. He played in both the 2002 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand and the 2004 tournament in Bangladesh, where he scored a valuable 67 in a win over Nepal. While at Durham University he represented Durham a handful of times, picking up useful wickets with his leg spin. He did not appear for the Durham first team in 2007 or 2008 and it remains to be seen if he can make the jump up in class.
