Hussain is English-qualified after playing several seasons of club cricket in the country and gaining a British passport.
He started his career in Pakistan in 1990, at the age of 16, and played for the Pakistan A team.
He is a genuine off-spinner, who can turn the ball, and made his first-class debut for Surrey against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in 2007, after trials at Derbyshire and Middlesex.
He continued to play for Surrey for the rest of that season and was offered a two-year deal at the end of the summer.
His chances were limited in 2008 with the re-arrival of Saqlain Mushtaq, but he played in four championship matches, taking seven wickets.
Hussain was one of four Surrey players released in August 2009.
