England’s record Test run-scorer, Cook's potential was clear from a young age. Following a string of impressive performances at domestic level, the tall left-hander was voted young player of the year by the Cricket Writers' Club in 2005 and celebrated by thumping 214 against the touring Australians 24 hours later. A maiden call-up to the Test squad followed when Michael Vaughan suffered a knee injury in Pakistan and, although Cook did not feature, having been summoned again for the first Test against India in Nagpur he rose to the challenge with scores of 60 and 104 not out on debut.
