A remarkably consistent middle-order batsman, Hildreth first hit the headlines in 2003 after a sensational performance against Durham in just his second first-class outing. Taking on an attack which included Shoaib Akhtar, the then 18-year-old struck a first-innings century at almost a run a ball before adding a further 72 in his second knock. Hildreth initially struggled to live up to his early promise before enjoying a breakthrough season in 2007, when he scored 1,270 runs at an average just shy of 53.
