A left-handed opener, Elgar has been the chief beneficiary of Graeme Smith’s retirement from Test cricket. Having made his debut against Australia in the middle-order – Mitchell Johnson dismissed him for a duck in both innings – Elgar has climbed through the ranks to his current opening position. He made a Test-best 121 against West Indies on Boxing Day 2014, but was one of numerous Proteas to endure a torrid tour of India in 2015. Elgar had a brief stint with Somerset in 2013 and made two County Championship appearances as Surrey won Division Two in 2015.
