Started his career as a top-order batsman and represented England A but in 1990 was persuaded to turn himself into a wicket-keeper/batsman, as required by Yorkshire at the time, and dropped down the order. Was called up for his England debut when he played in the Texaco Trophy match against Pakistan at Lord’s in 1992, scoring 25 in a three-run defeat.
