Clinton made his debut for Surrey in 2004 after leaving Essex in 2002 to join the south London club.
He was brought in to open the innings in place of new captain Jonathan Batty, who dropped himself down the order, and impressed with a well-crafted 73 in his first innings on his debut against Worcestershire.
Despite some big scores in the second XI, Clinton has so far failed to transfer his skills to the first class game.
He made a century for British Universities in 2005, and played in 12 of Surrey's 2005 County Championship matches, scoring one century in his 594 run tally.
His 2007 championship return was less successful though as he played in three matches, had two innings and scored ducks in them both. His single one-day game saw him make two.
He did not play at all in 2008 and was told his contract would not be renewed for 2009.
