A gifted left-handed batsman with the discipline to play long innings and a stubborn refusal to give his wicket away cheaply. He first broke onto the scene in 1994/95 with Western Australia and, after a couple of seasons bedding in, hammered 1,039 first class runs in 1998/99 to help steer his State side to Sheffield Shield glory. He earned a call-up into the Australia squad to tour Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe and was on the brink of playing his debut Test match against the Sri Lankans when he contracted chicken pox.
