Kerrigan, who spent much of his teens bowling left-arm seam before switching to spin, had been earmarked for success by the Lancashire coaching staff long before he took 5-47 on his first-team debut against Warwickshire in early 2010.

Fellow slow left-armer Gary Keedy’s recovery from a broken collarbone consigned Kerrigan to second spinner status for the rest of the season, but the youngster removed any remaining doubts over his worth the following summer.

Kerrigan’s astonishing 9-51 sealed victory over Hampshire with just four minutes remaining in the penultimate game of the 2011 campaign, and was arguably the most pivotal contribution to Lancashire’s LV= County Championship triumph.

Having made his England Lions debut that season, he was included in the England Performance Programme squad and Lions party to tour Bangladesh over the winter.

Kerrigan could not prevent the Red Rose suffering relegation in 2012 but, having taken 6-59 for the Lions versus Australia A at Old Trafford, kept his place in the EPP squad.
