Biography
Poynton made his debut for Derbyshire in their Twenty20 campaign of 2007 when regular wicketkeeper Jamie Pipe was injured. However, he failed to force his way into the first team in any competition the following year, with Tom New signed on loan from Leicestershire to cover Pipe's absence late in the season. Poynton was nevertheless selected in the England Under-19 squad to tour South Africa in early 2009. He made five appearances in the NatWest Pro40 in the 2009 season with a highest score of 24 to compliment three catches and a stumping.
