Though born in Australia, Ambrose holds a British passport. He made his first-class debut for Sussex in 2001 when he hit a half-century against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. He was one of two very talented wicketkeeper-batsmen on the Sussex staff, with the glove duties being shared between him and Matt Prior. Ambrose helped Sussex win the County Championship for the first time in their history in 2003, as well as totesport League Division Two in 2005.
