Afzaal’s Indian heritage is borne out in his strokeplay, which earned him three Test caps during the 2001 Ashes. His wristy batsmanship and efficient left-arm spin - he dismissed Adam Gilchrist with his third ball in Tests - were not enough to extend his international career although he toured India that winter. Afzaal had already played for England at under-15 and under-17 level before representing Nottinghamshire from 1995.
